Dr. Steven L. Johnson Attends NREA Executive Committee Meeting in Lake Placid, New York

Lisbon, ND – August 27, 2024 — Dr. Steven L. Johnson, Superintendent of Fort Ransom Elementary School, NDSOS Board member, and member of the National Rural Education Association (NREA) Executive Committee, recently attended the NREA Executive Committee's summer meeting in Lake Placid, New York, from July 13-16. Each year, the NREA Executive Committee selects a state's summer conference to host their meeting, and this year they chose the Rural Schools Association of New York State. The collaboration brought together rural education leaders from across the nation to address pressing issues in rural education.

The conference was held at the Lake Placid Conference Center, with the opening dinner taking place on the historic ice of Herb Brooks Arena, the site of the famous "Miracle on Ice" during the 1980 Winter Olympics. Mike Eruzione, Captain of the 1980 United States National Hockey team, delivered an inspiring keynote speech. Dr. Johnson and his wife, Linda, had the unique opportunity to walk on the ice where this remarkable piece of history was made.

The Rural Schools Association of New York State Summer Conference covered a range of critical issues that resonate with rural school districts nationwide. Topics included creating partnerships between schools and communities, addressing rural teacher shortages, preparing students for the future, navigating the challenges of new AI technology, providing effective professional development for rural educators, supporting student mental health, aligning curriculum with the needs of students, improving educational facilities, and securing adequate funding.

In addition to the conference, Dr. Johnson and his wife explored the scenic beauty of rural New York and Vermont. They enjoyed a ferry ride across Lake Champlain and toured Whiteface Mountain and the ski jumping area, both significant venues during the 1980 Winter Olympics. The Johnsons were impressed by the stunning landscapes and the warm hospitality of the people they encountered.

"The conference was an invaluable experience, offering insights and strategies that are directly applicable to the challenges we face in rural education," said Dr. Johnson. "It was also a pleasure to explore the rich history and natural beauty of this region."
